Contributing to Sakai

Meet User Needs through Community

One of the greatest benefits of Sakai is that the development is defined and driven by the needs of educators and researchers. Sakai’s designers and developers work closely with teaching and learning professionals on campuses across the world, ensuring the shortest possible distance between end-user needs and the software.  Most of this collaboration happens on our email lists and on the wiki.

An active group of colleges and universities, member institutions are committed to the collective success of the community. Teaching and learning professionals, faculty, instructional designers, and developers engage with peers across higher education to improve the quality of teaching, learning and research technologies. The result is remarkable professional development and cross-institutional knowledge sharing for those involved.

Technical Contributions

Sakai is a stable and scalable platform written mostly in Java and JavaScript. It is easy to install, integrate, maintain and contribute to its flexible and open architecture. The developer community is responsive and welcoming to newcomers. Learn more in the development space on our wiki Building Sakai.

Design Contributions

Sakai’s user experience (UX) design community includes user researchers, designers, developers and experts in web accessibility. We’re always looking for more people to lead our efforts to create software that is as easy as possible for everyone to use. Learn more in the user experience space on our wiki UX Working Group.

Teaching and Learning Contributions

Sakai has a very active Teaching and Learning community that brings together faculty, instructional designers and support staff. From creating the Teaching with Sakai Innovation Awards to contributing use cases for the design and development teams, the Teaching and Learning group is a great place to get involved and work with your peers around the glob. Learn more in the T&L space on our wiki.
