Extending Sakai with Community-Contributed Tools
Taking advantage of the Sakai project's open architecture, many community members develop and publish Sakai-specific tools and innovations known as “Contrib Tools.” Freely available as contributions to the community, these tools are tested, documented and released under open licenses for anyone to use, but they are not packaged with the core Sakai product release. Popular Contrib Tools are sanctioned by the community and considered reliable and of high quality. In fact, often the expanded features and innovations of Contrib Tools eventually become incorporated into the Sakai Core Tools.
Integrating Sakai with Third Party Tools Using IMS LTI
Sakai adopters frequently use the IMS Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) standard to easily and securely integrate third party learning tools and other systems into the Sakai environment. LTI v2 builds upon the widely adopted LTI v1 standard by providing a more sophisticated and extensible platform to enable deeper integrations and greater support for services and events. LTI v2 also provides enhanced outcomes reporting and a full extensions architecture allowing additional services to be added gradually using REST and JSON-LD to deliver this new functionality.
Sakai helped drive the development of the IMS LTI specification, and is the first learning and collaboration environment to support the second version of the specification (IMS LTI v 2) fully.
Purchasing Sakai Tools from Third Party Providers
While there are no license fees for Sakai or the Contrib Tools developed within the Sakai Community, a number of third party vendors offer proprietary tools and integration services for Sakai. Sakai adopters may purchase these tools and services directly from the companies that offer them.
- Third-party system integration: Companies (typically Commercial Affiliates or software vendors) provide integration components and services to create interoperability between Sakai and other campus systems such as student information systems, collaboration tools, assessment solutions, classroom capture tools, etc.
- Custom tool development: Commercial Affiliates and other third party providers can create Sakai-compatible tools according to specifications of adopter institutions.
- Custom integration services: Commercial Affiliates, software vendors, systems integrators and other companies develop custom integration to connect Sakai with other campus systems.
